Teamwork and training: an insight into the SES apprenticeship programme

At SES, we take pride in investing in the next generation. Because of the nature of our business, and the specialist tools that we have in our fleet, it is imperative that we have the right people working for us. And one of the best ways to do this is to provide hands-on experience via our apprenticeship program.

In our latest blog post, we take time out to talk to mechanical technician, Jack Stewart, about his experience as an apprentice.

Setting the foundations

I’ve been with the company for almost three years now, and to say that I’ve learned a lot is an understatement. My role has really changed since joining the company in October 2021. Health and safety is at the heart of everything we do at SES, which meant that when I first started at the company I spent a lot of time observing, asking questions and working on smaller tasks. I quickly got up to speed and now spend my days working on the large range of mechanical tools that SES has available.

My favourite part of the job has got to be the learning. Even almost three years in, I’m still learning something new every day. We’re always adding to our fleet and investing in new equipment, and my job is to understand how the tools work in order to safely service and maintain them.

Building a strong team

The best thing about SES has to be the people. Everyone enjoys their job and works together as one big team.

The average length of service is 14 years - which is a long time in a buoyant industry with plenty of healthy competition. This in itself shows how happy everyone is at SES. We’re lucky enough to have the support of our managers, and our parent company Worley, who regularly holds team events, lunch and learns and has a genuine passion in developing a strong and happy team.

Developing key skills

I’ve found that good communication is essential. You’ve got to be able to work well as a team, especially when last-minute jobs come in. You have to manage your time effectively to ensure you hit all your deadlines. At SES we work as a team, and if I know that I’ll struggle to meet a deadline, I’ll flag it early to the team and we all pitch in to meet the client deadline, coming together as a team.

I’d say that I’ve changed quite a bit since leaving school and joining SES. My confidence has grown and I’ve become more confident in making decisions. I only have a year left of college and I can’t wait to see the opportunities that are waiting.
